Vehicle info

When the road ahead is long, it's time for a more refined kind of bike one capable of providing a comfortable ride regardless of the distance. This 2006 BMW K1200GT is just that kind of bike. Packed with a smooth four-cylinder, a six-speed transmission, and an impressive list of comfort and convenience features, it's not hard to see why Cycle World named it Best Sport-Tourer of 2006. With just 11,309 original miles and options including seat warmers, cruise control, a navigation system, and BMW's impressive Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA), this tourer is loaded and ready to make your road trip day dreams a reality. For under $12k, you won't find a better way to enjoy the back roads!

It doesn't take a BMW fanatic to recognize the K1200GT from a distance. It's not heavily branded but the aero-friendly styling is unmistakable. The front end is hidden by cowling that incorporates the headlight, turn signals, and windscreen base into one seamless package. The cowling continues below, keeping most of the engine out of sight as well. To the rear, lockable and detachable saddle bags offer plenty of storage for day trips. Those pieces are covered in a sleek coat of Crystal Gray Metallic paint with small BMW badges at either side.

As a sport-touring bike, great handling isn't optional. A rock-solid chassis makes sure it's a strong point for the K1200GT. The base is an aluminum composite frame, with the engine tucked low to help keep cornering neutral. At the front, the bumps are absorbed by a Duolever front suspension that uses a shear joint to communicate steering movements, eliminating the need for sliding and fixed tubes. Out back, the EVO Paralever system is equally impressive, operating much like a double wishbone setup in a car. The suspension is further aided by BMW's slick ESA system which allows riders to toggle between normal, Sport, and Comfort settings. The system alters front and rear rebound and compression on the fly for the ultimate in tailored traveling. Squeeze the brakes lever and a pair power-assisted disc brakes with Integral ABS bring the big tourer to a authoritative halt. The whole setup rides on 17-inch wheels wrapped in new Dunlop 120/70ZR17 front and 190/50ZR17 rear tires that have seen just over 100 miles worth of action.

Now onto the comfort part of the equation. BMW is known for luxury and there's plenty of that to be found on the GT. For starters, the bars and heated seat offer an impressive degree of adjustability so you can get your riding position dialed in. The windscreen is also adjustable on the fly to keep the elements out of your face. The left handlebar controls features like cruise control and the ESA system while the right reins over the heated grips and starter. From there, things take a turn for the technical. The bike comes with an On Board Computer that sends info to a centrally-mounted LCD screen nestled between the speedometer and tach. There's all sorts of information to scroll through including air temperature, fuel range, and average fuel consumption plus dual tripmeters and a clock. On top of that, a recently updated navigation system makes sure you never stray too far from the path.

Like any BMW, there's a solid drivetrain at the core. This one starts with a single-intake 1157cc four-cylinder engine borrowed from the K1200R - the bike's supersport cousin. Since the GT was built for a very different style rider, BMW invested extra time into tuning the bike for its intended use. Though it resulted in slightly less horsepower than the R, (152hp vs. 163hp) it makes up for that difference with torque. Not only does the GT make slightly more torque than the R (96lb-ft vs. 94lb-ft), it does so 500 revs sooner, so you won't have to dig as deep to find it. Thanks to some solid tuning, the fuel-injected mill offers surprisingly linear power from 3,000rpm all the way to 10,000rpm redline. The engine is backed by a six-speed gearbox that channels power to the real wheel through a shaft drive. With the 6.3 gallon tank, BMW claims the GT is good for 49mpg or roughly 300 miles per tank a solid day of cruising.

Looking for the perfect bike to cruise through the mountains this fall? This 2006 BMW K1200GT is well worth your consideration. With its solid 1157cc four-cylinder, six-speed transmission, and list of options that could very well describe a BMW car, finding a more well rounded package would be a challenge. Clear out a space in your garage and bring this low-mileage tourer home today. It's the most fun you'll have this year for under $12k!
