Up for auction is this very well sorted '72 Norton Commando. I believe this to be the correct original 4800 miles! I purchased this Norton out of Alabama where it was last licensed in 1978. In short, the story told to me was the 2nd owner had died in '78, leaving the bike in his estate. It sat from this point on being stored inside a barn for 18 years, then a basement for 9 years and then transferred to an enclosed carport where I found it early this year. Although the bike was neglected, it did not suffer from multiple joy-rider abuse as it was out of sight-out of mind. It was spared the bad-wrenching that sometimes happens by it's virtue of being neglected. I had no idea what this bike would need to get it going again, but I could see it still had killer compression by kicking it over and I was re-assured that the bike ran as new when parked for it's soon to be nearly 4 decades! Upon my purchase of this bike, I started it's revival by removing the oil tank, draining the sludge & cleaning the tank, filter screen, crankcase & lines. The gas tank was remarkably clean but was also cleaned & flushed and received new petcocks and new Norton 'H' style fuel line. The original carbs also we're rebuilt.I drained the front fork tubes and re-filled with Castrol 30W oil. The brakes needed attention of course. I rebuilt the front master and caliper. The rear brake was good but I completely dis-assembled and cleaned everything and replaced the dried out rear hub drive rubbers with (6) new ones. While brakes we're apart I had both tires and tubes replaced with Duro 410X19" tires similar to original rounded profile type. It also received all new footpeg rubber.  I replaced the plugs, points/condenser, installed new battery(has original hold-down bracket), new air filter element and both rubber boots and adjusted valves & replaced rocker cover gaskets. I then replaced both mufflers and all rubber spool mounts. I filled the oil tank with Castrol 4T 20W-50, drained & filled the drive chain case and transmission using Castrol fluids only including front brake fluid. I tickled the carbs, turned the key on and kicked it over starting on 3rd kick. After some carb adjustment bike runs great & idles smoothly. This bike now usually starts in 1-3 kicks! As far as the cosmetics, I had the original seat cover replaced (still original fiberglass seat pan & foam cushion). The original black paint is excellent on the sidecovers and fair to good on the tank. Too good to re-paint in my opinion. I did have the tank re-pinstriped in gold(handpainted by local Bob Taylor Pinstriping) and sidecover & tank decals replaced also. The chrome is all original and does show a 45 year old patina with the headlight bucket and chainguard showing the most peppering. This bike still has it's original rear chain that I of course removed and cleaned-it shows no sign of wear or stretching. This bike runs & shifts as it should with very strong clutch. Also, does not smoke or leak oil, except for the correctly working rear chain oiler, which will leave a few drops after sitting. This bike still has the (4) original keys it was born with and original/working front fork lock. It also has the owner handbook & shop manual. This Norton came new with no turn signals as shown in the picture of the enclosed dealer ad. Everything works as it should;headlight dim/bright, horn, kill button, tail-light, stop-light, speedo, tach & original power socket. I planned on keeping this bike but now have decided to sell to have the extra money to put towards a Corvette purchase. I will keep it if it does not meet my reserve. Kevin Schwantz To Race Goodwood Aboard Norton Featherbed

If you didn’t already notice, Kevin Schwantz has a full plate this year. At 50 years young, the 1993 500cc World Champion will be competing at the prestigious Suzuka 8-Hours in a few weeks, and he’s followed that up with the announcement he will be making his Goodwood Revival debut during the September 12-14 event on an iconic Manx Norton ‘Featherbed’. Schwantz, last raced on UK soil during the 1994 British 500cc Grand Prix at Donington Park, but will tackle the daunting Goodwood Motor Circuit this year in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, which will be run for bikes of 1951-54 period.
