Tonti Masterpiece - Timeless Classic

An excellent blend of super solid engineering, deft design details and renowned steel chassis.
Distinctly Italian flair.  A 1970's standout for sure.

T is for Tonti -
If you haven't owned one of these, it's worth doing a bit of research.  Every once in awhile a manufacturer allows the right engineering minds at the right time to truly flesh out the ideal.  Lino Tonti was given the opportunity and this is the result.  The engineering credentials of the signature v-twin were set in stone.  It needed to be mated to the right frame. Race inspired with tractor like reliability - pretty unique and cool modern classic.  Take a tour of all pics at this link -http://s1382.photobucket.com/user/rootedowne/library/1976%20Moto%20Guzzi%20-%20T3

Most of these were ridden hard and put to rest.  Understandable approach. Others have been heavily modified.  Pretty rare to come across one that is so original and well preserved.  The stripes and paint are as they were from the factory.

More Details -
A close eye will notice the absence of mirrors and front turn signals.  You may also notice the seat looks new.  Brand new cover and foam.  I have the mirrors and they come with the bike.  At some point they were painted black, but I believe they are original to the bike.  The front turn signals were removed some time ago, likely during front fork updates. Ready for your touches in that regard.

The 3 in T-3 stands for triple disc brakes.  Sourced from Brembo, this linked package was an engineering feat for which Moto Guzzi was quite proud.  In a decade so dominated by Japanese advances, this model really stands out it's unique and equally impressive approach.  Part flair, part pragmatism. The original wheels are these are as sturdy and timeless as the rest of the bike.  Now wearing a nice set of Bridgestones.

Important mechanical upgrades have recently been done.  They include complete fuel line updating, Dellarto carb tuning, 2 into 1 carb stacks and K&N filter, installation of braided steel brake lines and importantly, an upgrade to Gilardoni sourced cylinder heads.  If you aren't aware of the issues surrounding the original chrome heads with these models, be sure to read up on it before you purchase.  Gilardoni has the right solution.  She's ready to enjoy!

There are a few scratches in what appears to be original paint.  They have been filled touched up by conscientious owners.  The worst one is on one of the side covers.  The side covers one these are steel and another excellent example of Italian design details.

Numbers matching original -
The ID plate on the front down tube indicates VIN # 100677.  That is also stamped on the engine.  The manufacturer's date is January of 1975. The title is 1976.  After import and final dealership transactions, it wasn't titled until the following year.  Pretty common for the era.  Mileage can not be fully verified, but originality of lacquer paint and overall condition certainly add up to a well preserved, gently used time capsule.

EICMA 2008: First Impressions

Mon, 03 Nov 2008

I have had a little walk around checking out the preparations for the show. I haven’t seen anything that I haven’t already seen or heard about previously, but here’s a selection from three of the halls. Yamaha are the only manufacturer to use an industrial crane to place some of its bikes up on high rise stands.

Ewan McGregor Stars in Ad Campaign for 2013 Moto Guzzi California 1400

Fri, 05 Apr 2013

Considering how much his films “Long Way Round” and “Long Way Down” for popularizing the GS, you’d think Scottish actor Ewan McGregor was a BMW guy. His friend and co-star in those two travelogues, Charley Boorman is a BMW brand ambassador, and it’d be easy to assume McGregor is as well. The truth is McGregor, well known for his love of motorcycles, is a much bigger fan of Moto Guzzi.

Ghezzi-Brian V-Twin Motard Kit for Moto Guzzi Griso Featuring Dynamic Damping Action Suspension

Tue, 19 Jun 2012

Moto Guzzi tuner Ghezzi-Brian unveiled a new motard based on the Moto Guzzi Griso. Available either as a whole motorcycle or as a ready-to-install kit for a Moto Guzzi Griso, the Ghezzi-Brian V-Twin Motard turns the Italian eagle brand’s roadster into a supermoto. The V-Twin Motard even fooled some of the motorcycle press into thinking it was a new Moto Guzzi Stelvio production model when a prototype was caught by spy photographers.
