For most riders, the Sportster has a pure seat-of-the-pants appeal. No doubt a function of all that internal combustion happening right beneath your seat. But that doesn’t mean the eyes can’t join the fun, which is why we build the 883 Custom. A chrome bullet headlight leads the way, followed by a flat handlebar on pullback risers. A 4.5-gallon fuel tank adds some meat to the clean custom profile. You get a powder-coat treatment on the engine, and forward controls for an easy-going riding posture. And up top, a two-up seat. The feeling rings true today as it did 72 years ago, when Wallace Van Sandt, of Birmingham, Alabama, took delivery of his 1941 Harley-Davidson WLD Special Sport Solo, purchased new in 1940 for $365 (roughly $5800 in today’s money) by his father as a high school graduation gift. The WLD Special Sport Solo was a ringer in its day.
Ohio Man to be Buried on 1967 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide
Fri, 31 Jan 2014Billie Leo Standley died last weekend from lung cancer, but before he died, the 82-year-old wished for the world to know he was going to ride off to heaven. To accomplish this wish, Standley and his family made arrangements for him to buried in a Plexiglas casket riding his 1967 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. In the contest’s three-year history, the combined margin of victory stands at just over two tenths of a second. And last year’s dogfight saw ninth position take the checkered flag less than eight tenths removed from the victory. Each previous contest has developed into a full-blown drafting war, with the class’ evenly matched machinery testing the tactical acumen of its pilots as they negotiate the high banks within inches of one another.
