Harley-Davidson Other description

1972 Harley Davidson Aermacchi MC-65 Shortster Minibike.

Bike is a true "barn find".  Sitting for many, many years, as soon as I found out about it, I bought it sight unseen.  The Shortster was HD's first version of a mini motorcycle.  3 speed gearbox, real clutch, and 2 stroke 65cc engine.

This bike has all original paint finishes and patina.  I have not done anything to it cosmetically, aside from waxing the tank.  The tank is the original paint, and in outstanding condition for its age and the quality of the Italian paint.  It has only very minor blemishes and shines unbelievably, no dents. The inside of the tank has been correctly coated with POR-15.  When I found the bike, the engine was locked up. (piston was stuck)  After much searching, I finally found an NOS, still in the box, cylinder and piston set. (I believe I still have the box, and if so, it will come with the bike)  I split the cases and put all new (NOS Harley) crank bearings and seals in it, so the engine is brand new mechanically.  The bike starts on the first kick, and runs perfectly.  It is, of course, standard stock bore.  Absolutely everything works, headlight (high and low), tail and brake light, speedometer and horn.  The tires are the original Pirellis, in great shape.  The wheel bearings have been repacked, and the brakes work excellent. The seat is in wonderful condition. The carburetor, and air filter are original, even the gas line is original.  All wiring is original.  The engine, original Vin decal, and frame stamping numbers all match.

This is a rare example, as it is a very early production model, (9/1971).  There are some key differences from the later ones.  Notably, the headlight and reflectors are different, the reflectors are smaller than found on later MC-65's and X-90's.  The seat is another major difference, the very first Shortsters did not have "Harley Davidson" printed on the back of the seat.

This is probably one of the best original examples you will find, and would look awesome in a man cave or on display at a shop or museum.  The bike can certainly be ridden, I have probably ridden it 25 miles to a couple bike shows.  This bike is street legal, and has a clean Minnesota title.

Anyone can have a restored one of these, but a true survivor is a rare item.

You can hear it run here:  https://youtu.be/ZARqSmH_Wbo

I can help with pickup or shipping if needed, although don't expect me to crate it up for free.

Donation of Photos and Memorabilia to Harley-Davidson Museum Reveal Glimpse of Early Days at Harley

Thu, 22 Mar 2012

Harley-Davidson Museum today posted on its Facebook page a selection of photos it received as part of collection of images and memorabilia donated by a former Harley employee. According to the Facebook post former H-D employee Bob Jameson donated “ two scrapbooks, numerous photographs, news clippings and other company related materials” for the museum’s collection. Jameson, following in his father’s footsteps, worked for The Motor Company, and in 1960 helped develop a motorcycle suited for use in the Vietnam war.

Mark your calendars for February 5 and 6, 2013, as those are the dates when Bonhams — one of the world’s largest auctioneers of fine arts and antiques — will put for sale two motorcycle collections which include some incredibly rare and historic machines. The Grand Palais in Paris, France will play host to the auction, which includes the entire Garelli Grand Prix collection as its headliner. Founded in 1919, many famous Italian racers got their starts on Garelli motorcycles.

A Man of LOVE

Fri, 24 Oct 2008

I had a unique opportunity this week to sit down with Oliver Shokouh, the founder of the Love Ride, only days before the 25th anniversary of the purportedly largest one-day rally in the world, kicks-off this coming Sunday, October 26. First and foremost I’m very grateful for Oliver to set aside over half an hour of his precious time so close to the event. Not only does he head-up this massive event, he’s also busy running the very busy and successful Harley-Davidson/Buell of Glendale (California).
