BSA Spitfire / Lightning description

1967 BSA A65 SPITFIRE / LIGHTNING 650 TWIN

REFURBISHED SURVIVOR, ICONIC "BITSA" BRITBIKE

NO RESERVE - YOU BID, YOU WIN!

On offer is a rough but reasonably complete BSA Spitfire / Lightning 650, part of British motorcycling history.

This particular bike was in very sorry condition when I found it (see "before" photo with Sporty tank!), but I managed to locate a nearly perfect original seat and "toaster" tank with the original chrome in excellent shape, and a very good replacement engine. I've done a nominal "make-run" refurbishing with good serviceable replacement parts of the same general vintage, type and style. IT IS NOT RESTORED. Technically, the bike would be considered a "bitsa" because the engine and frame are from two different years, and some of the parts are not correct for the specific year model ("bits of this, and bits of that" = bitsa).

Here is specific information about every aspect of this motorcycle, as far as can be determined after tearing the motorcycle down. Short of tearing the bottom end down, the following information is one of the most complete descriptions of a bike for sale that you can or will find:

CHASSIS & SUSPENSION - Mostly original 1967 Spitfire chassis as dispatched from the factory; nothing appears to be damaged to the point that it could not be refurbished or restored. Some missing nuts and bolts have been replaced with standard hardware. Shocks are in excellent shape, swingarm moves freely; shocks do not appear to have leaked. Different year model forks have been flushed and refilled, and they have some minor pitting in the seal contact area. Rubber gaiters are torn, BUT BIKE HAS BEEN PARKED INSIDE SINCE I INSTALLED THE FORKS; guaranteed to NOT have water in them! Steering neck rotates freely through the entire turning radius. Centerstand and sidestand are present.

WHEELS, BRAKES & TIRES - All original; both rims have rusted chrome. Brakes have been cleaned and adjusted. Spokes are all in good condition. Tires are old and need replacing.

ENGINE - 1966 A65 Lightning 650 engine, in good condition Top end refreshed, valves lapped, cylinders lightly honed, some new gaskets.

INTAKE & EXHAUST - Original Amal Monobloc carbs, thoroughly cleaned, with some replacement gaskets, on original manifolds; Original BSA pancake air filters. Fair set of original headers, chrome mostly dull / surface rusted; nice pair of original "sausage on a stick" mufflers.

IGNITION & CHARGING SYSTEMS- Good used Sparx electronic ignition, original coils. Lucas alternator, zener diode and rectifier.

HAND & FOOT CONTROLS - All original footpegs, rear brake lever, shifter, handlebars, levers & throttle. Aftermarket folding passenger footpegs. Decent cables, all working properly. No choke (enricher) cables, lever is present.

ELECTRICAL & LIGHTING - NO WIRING HARNESS. Original horn/dipper switch with pigtail. Original ignition leads from ignition out to coils. Original headlight and tail light complete. Original rear brake light switch.

METERS - Original Smiths meters, both requiring rebuild.

BODYWORK & CYCLE PARTS - Excellent condition gas tank with paint and chrome in great shape (some small scratches & nicks). Gas cap present, tank logos in excellent condition, taps present but very rough; incorrect main hold-down bolt. Seat in near perfect condition, no tears, foam not deteriorated; logo faded. Sidecovers dull, scratched, oversprayed, missing proper fasteners. Fenders in good condition. Grab bar and mounting loop in fair condition, chrome peeled & some rust. Headlight ears in fair condition. Battery try in good shape with proper rubber isolators. Tool kit pan in good shape. Tail light & license plate bracket in good condition. Shock shrouds in great shape, chrome chain guard in fair condition. Original coil mount assembly in good condition.

DOCUMENTATION - This bike is sold with Bill of Sale ONLY. Clean Texas title at BUYER'S EXPENSE, process takes about 90 days. Vermont registration & license plate possible in 30 days, no title from VT.

SHIPPING - Shipping / transportation is BUYER'S RESPONSIBILITY. If crating is required, cost is responsibility of the buyer; I will disassemble and/or crate the bike FOR AN ADDITIONAL FEE.

OTHER - I can fit new tires, and make ANY upgrades or modifications (internal or external) the buyer wants at BUYER'S EXPENSE. I can also totally refurbish or restore the bike to original condition, at BUYER'S EXPENSE.

BOTTOM LINE

As with every bike, project and part I’ve sold online in over 15 years (with 100% satisfaction), the above listing contains NO HYPE, NO FLUFF, AND NO BULL. Photos clearly show condition as described above, and include all details on the bike. I have sold over 40 bikes on ebay with a PERFECT record.

This is a good, solid BSA in near-running condition. It needs little detail work here and there, absolutely nothing critical; basically proper fuel line taps, a wiring harness & battery, and a set of tires. With a relatively small budget and ordinary tools, this can be a decent everyday rider BritBike.

SOLD AS-IS, NO WARRANTY. ALL SALES FINAL, NO RETURNS, NO REFUNDS.

Thanx for looking and bidding.

Paul Teutel Senior of “American Chopper” fame is having a clear-out of his bike collection but the machines on offer are a far cry from the overblown customs he's renowned for building. Instead, they reveal a passion for vintage British machinery. One of his auctions is for a 1943 BSA M20 and it's currently at $4,500 (£2700) with a $5,000 (£3,080) Buy It Now price

What’s Old Is New Again – Video

Mon, 14 Oct 2013

There’s something distinctly cool about old British motorcycles. From the wire wheels, the minimal bodywork, and the exposed engines which give off a thunderous bark, I’ve always loved looking at old Triumphs, BSAs and the like from the 60s.  I’ve never owned one though. The reason is simple: old British bikes are needy little maintenance machines notorious for the odd oil leak.
