We are offering for sale this recently finished 1969 BSA 650 Lightning custom chopper. This chopper was designed and built as a reproduction of an authentic 1960`s British chopper with springer front end, hard tail and no front brake. This is not our normal pursuit of Brit bike building, but we built it specifically for a customer who wanted to replicate his BSA chopper which he rode from California to Kentucky in the early 70`s. Unfortunately his financial situation deteriorated and hence we are in the position of liquidating the bike. It is a matching number 1969 Lightning, and it has a clear and matching Florida title. We did not cut the bike up....I refuse to do that....the frame and engine came to us already hard tailed with an extended stock BSA front end from the NC mountains. My son Jimmy is responsible for re-welding, strengthening, and fabricating all of the brackets etc. on the frame. I rebuilt the engine (50 years of BSA experience) from bottom to top beginning with stripping the rotating assembly and cleaning out the sludge trap. New bearings, rings, valve job, no Asian parts in the engine, all American (Hastings rings) or British. It was a low mileage engine with little wear. The bike has a 16 in rear Harley rim laced to a BSA hub, and a 17 inch spool front with no brake and a new Michelin tire. The springer front end has been disassembled, cleaned and painted, bushings replaced where needed, and re- assembled. It has an octagon oil tank/battery box with a new acid gel 12V battery. It uses the original Lucas electrics, 12V coils condensors and points and rectifier and zener diode charging system. These are simple systems, and as long as the connections are maintained they work very well contrary to popular belief. Most of the frame etc. is finished in satin black and the tank and rear fender are charcoal metallic.
The engine has a total of about 2 hours break in time on it, and will still require more break in period. The chain is currently pieced together and slaps quite a bit at certain speeds so it will get a new chain before I release it to anyone, and if I can get some more time on it I will change the fluids and re adjust the rockers.
The bike was built with almost ALL vintage American or British chopper parts. The front end, tank, seat, sissy bar, oil tank, spool wheel, hog rear wheel, rear fender, risers and drag bars, KD head light and Lucas tail light housing are all parts from the 1960`s. The only Asian parts on the entire bike are the tail light lens the battery and the air filters.
By the way, I forgot to mention...this is a no reserve auction. The opening bid is $4900.00 which is what I need to break even on the bike. If you are the winning bidder you have purchased the bike and will be expected to pay for it according to the guide lines. thanks

Happy bidding and good luck! Cheers,Bob

The Steve McQueen Desert Racer
Tue, 24 Mar 2009There are few motorcycle icons within pop culture that have endured as vividly as that of the late, great Steve McQueen. A man who was at one time the highest paid actor in Hollywood, he avoided the limelight in favor of immersing himself within his passion for motorcycles. Never afraid of getting dirty, McQueen was at his happiest flogging a bike around the track with fellow racers or tinkering with the machines himself.
