Melandri Signs with Aprilia WSBK Team

Marco Melandri has signed a one-year contract to race with Aprilia‘s factory World Superbike team to ride the RSV4 for the 2014 season. The Ravenna, Italy, native will join the returning Sylvain Guintoli, taking the place of Eugene Laverty on the factory team. The move also reunites Melandri with Aprilia; Melandri raced three seasons on an Aprilia RSV250 in the 250cc Grand Prix championship, winning the title in 2002 for his first, and so far, only world title.

I don't care about the fact it was a shit-or-bust gamble by Aprilia, that tarnished their almost immaculate GP reputation - infact that makes it even cooler. No-one expected Aprilia to enter a bike into the four-stroke category, their heritage in GP dictated that their interests lay in two-strokes, but what was more left-field than Aprilia's entry?

When he signed with the team, Eugene Laverty said he would give all he possibly could to bring Suzuki back to the top of the podium once again. Well, it sure didn’t take the Northern Irishman long to accomplish that goal, winning the very first race of the 2014 season at Australia’s Phillip Island course. The win was Laverty’s third in a row, including the final two races of the 2013 season when he raced for Aprilia.
